I love burritos but this is a food that can add up in calories and fat pretty quickly. For example, if you love Chipotle, you can play with this nutritional calculator, pick the fixings you normally get, and the calculator will add up the total calories for you.
Because of this calculator, I now usually get the burrito bowl versus a tortilla because the tortilla alone has 290 calories!
But sometimes, eh, I love tortillas, so I'll get the tortilla, but here's 3 other ways I can slim down my burrito.
- I cut the burrito in half and eat one half, and save the other hallf for lunch the next day. Not only does cutting the burrito in half save me on calories and fat for the day, it helps me save money since I basically have a 2-for-1 lunch. This savings is important for those of us who are budget conscious.
On the second day of this particular burrito eating day, I opened up the tortilla on a plate and added avocado slices on top. I basically just ate the filling and left the tortilla since it was a bit on the mushy side.
- Cutting out cheese and sour cream, can slim down the burrito significantly. Now I know some of you are thinking, "Well how fun is that?" Well, you decide. Using the Chipotle calculator, you can save 220 calories and 19g of fat by simply eliminating the cheese and sour cream.
For flavoring, I load up on salsa. At my local Whole Foods, they have mango salsa so I stack up on that and chunky tomato salsa. The fruit adds a refreshing fruity twist. Also, there is hot sauce. Hot sauce makes everything taste zesty!
- I get pinto beans and rice, and ask to go low on the meat which is normally chicken for me. Many places pile on the meat, so asking to lower the meat actually can bring you down to handful levels which is about a serving of meat thus helping with portion control.
So, there's just a few ways I slim down my burrito. What are some ways you trim down yours?
