Fruit kabobs are something really fun and easy to make. Who says you can only put meat on a stick? For those summer barbecues coming up, zesty fruit kabobs make a great dessert, or a "stick food" alternative for your vegetarian, vegan, and raw folks in the group.
Besides, barbecues, I think the zesty fruit kabobs would be a great appetizer for a bridal shower, a baby shower, or a cocktail party. Fruit kabob with a chilly Mandarin Cosmo sounds divine, no?
With the fruit kabobs, go crazy with your imagination. In the picture above, to make an "international" themed fruit kabob, I used 12" barbecue sticks, mint leave garnish and the following fruits:
- Pineapple
- Red Grapes (These always remind me of Italy)
- Korean Melon
- Kiwi
- Mango
To give the kabob the "zest" sprinkle on some salt and cayenne. Go very light on the seasoning to enhance the fruit flavors. As a dip for the kabob, you could make a sweet yogurt dipping sauce with a bowl of yogurt with some cinnamon, nutmeg, or pumpkin pie spice mixed in. Throw in some granola for a crunch.
A quick way to make the fruit kabobs is to go to your local salad bar at the grocery store, and just pick about 5 fruits already pre-cut. Whole Foods has tubs of pre-cut fruits as well.
As a fun thing, for the bridal shower or bachelorette party, you could scoop out the fruits into balls and call the stick food "Fruit kaboobs."...Okay, so I'm having a giggle with the fruit humor.
