Won ton soup is one of my favorite soups but it's one of those things that I wouldn't make at home
because making won tons from scratch is way too work extensive for my nanosecond need to eat...at least last week it was. My local Whole Foods was having a sale on these O'Hana House bite size spicy garlic chicken won tons which are made with organic chicken, so I thought score! I can make won ton soup at home.
By the way, O'Hana House has a whole line of won tons that include chicken & cilantro, pineapple chicken, shrimp & vegetable, pork & ginger, tofu & vegetable (vegan), and Indian Curry (vegan).
I gotta make my soup hearty so I added spinach and water chestnuts to "beef" up my soup so to speak. This whole dish was so fast to make, I don't think it took more than 10 minutes.
Ingredients (Serves 2-3)
- 3 cups Whole Foods 365 Brand Organic Chicken Broth
- Half a bag of the Spicy Garlic Won tons
- One 8oz. can of Whole Foods 365 brand Water Chestnuts
- 2 handfuls of fresh spinach (Sounds like a lot but spinach quickly shrinks and I like lots of spinach)
- Salt to taste
Note: You don't need to use Whole Foods brands or organic products. I like the 365 brand because it is either the same price or cheaper compared to the same items in my local Safeway or Lucky's. Plus, I'm lazy and want to save gas, so I like to buy everything in one store.
Let's start cookin'
- In a pot, bring the chicken broth to a boil
- Throw in the water chestnuts and the won tons and boil for 2 minutes per instructions on won ton bag
- Take pot off the hot burner on the stove and place on a cool burner.
- Throw the spinach in and cover the pot. Let sit for about 2 minutes or until the spinach become wilty. You don't want to boil the spinach, you want to sweat it so that it stays leafy. Boiling can be too rough on the spinach and make it goopy.
- Taste the broth with one won ton. Personally, I don't think the soup needs more salt because I like lower salt, but I can see where some might need a little bit more of a salt kick.
- Serve in cute soup bowls!
