Yesterday, at a brown bag event at Gangplank about social media and non-profits, I made a new friend @halfacat aka Roger who took me to this really cool place in Chandler for lunch called Pita Jungle. I met Roger via @KammieK all thanks to Twitter.
Wednesday marked my first full week as a Phoenix resident, and I'm telling you thanks to Twitter I'm able to meet people and make friends. When it comes to making a move to a new state, Twitter has proven to be a lifesaver.
Pitas are plentiful
We started out with a hummus appetizer, and for main course Roger had the Gyro and I had the One Thousand Beans which is a hot open pita topped with brown rice, mixed beans, tomatoes and onions. You can check out their pita menu. The food was faboosh!
btw, I took the pita beans picture with my new iPhone and it's pretty good. It's not my Nikon D50 quality, but for a camera phone I'm pretty happy. Admittedly, I did some tweaking in Photoshop, but still, you need to start out with a good quality picture to work with.
Diet changes can improve your health
Turns out Roger and I have lots in common particularly when it comes to views on food and health. He was a vegetarian and then 8 months ago went vegan in an effort to lower his cholesterol. I told him how I've experimented with all kinds of eating like raw, macrobiotic, vegan, vegetarian, Zone, etc. You name it I've tried it.
Roger's doc wanted to put him on the cholesterol lowering pills but Roger opted to try a nutritional change in diet first, and it worked. He got his cholesterol levels down significantly. No pills involved.
The change in diet is something I would have totally done too as I'm anti-pill especially when it comes to things that can be tied to what you eat on a daily basis. To me, it's worth trying the diet change first and see what happens.
If the diet changes don't work, okay then, do the pills. But still, I believe cleaning up your food, and finding something that nutritionally works for your body is still a better long term solution versus taking pills.
Roger also bakes and I told him how I've been missing my vegan banana nut muffins from Whole Foods in California. He's up for the challenge of baking me some muffins and gluten-free if I'd like. Yes please!
